Lembah Alas

Nama lengkapnya,  Christian Snouck Hurgronje , lahir di pada 8 Februari 1857 di Tholen, Oosterhout, Belanda. Seperti ayah, kakek, dan kakek buyutnya yang betah menjadi pendeta Protestan, Snouck pun sedari kecil sudah diarahkan pada bidang teologi. Tamat sekolah menengah, dia melanjutkan ke Universitas Leiden untuk mata kuliah Ilmu Teologi dan Sastra Arab, 1875. Lima tahun kemudian, dia tamat dengan predikat cum laude dengan disertasi  Het Mekaansche Feest  (Perayaan di Mekah). Tak cukup bangga dengan kemampuan bahasa Arab-nya, Snouck kemudian melanjutkan pendidiklan ke Mekah, 1884. Di Mekah, keramahannya membuat para ulama tak segan membimbingnya. Dan untuk kian merebut hati ulama Mekah, Snouck memeluk Islam dan berganti nama menjadi  Abdul Ghaffar . Every year just before Hari Raya Adilfitri starts, the sleepy suburbs of Taman Tun Dr. Ismail will be invaded by these smoke, people and lots of food when the lemang stalls start their festive business. Lemang, a Malay delicacy made from glutinous rice cooked in a bamboo tube over slow fire is a must have during the festivities especially with some rendang (Malay for meat curry in coconut milk and spices). There was a carnival-like atmosphere around the area with stalls lining the main road leading towards 1 Utama Shopping Centre with cars stopping at the side to buy lemang for their festivities or even non-Muslims enjoying the delicacy. Who says there is no traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur as everyone has "balik kampung"?
